An Interiew with Jonas

While making Christmas cookies this afternoon, Jonas and I had a little chat about Santa. We were baking and listening to Christmas music and the song, "Here comes Santa Claus" came on, so naturally a conversation arose:) A little background on the whole Santa controversy: Jason and I have decided that Santa is not a big deal. We are not passionately against talking about him or letting our kids "believe" but we are also not super pro Santa...we don't have pictures of him in our house, we don't take our kids to have their pictures taken with him at the mall (can you say, overpriced?), and we don't intentionally talk about him bringing presents...but he's fine with us, and if Jonas has fun imagining Santa, then that's great. I certainly did as a kid and seemed to turn out okay I think:) A few parents I have talked to, though, are really against Santa and everything that goes with him and warn against lying to your children and all of that. "Chill out" is my honest response...I mean, let's be honest, we tell our kids stories all the time, and having them imagine and even believe in things that are not "real" is part of childhood...I used to dream up all kinds of people and animals and name them, and honestly, it was a sweet thing. I was a dreamer, and I know Jason was (is) too:) And while Jesus is %100 the reason for Christmas, and that is what we talk about and teach and reinforce in our home, I am also not on a crusade against Santa like some seem to be. He certainly is low on the priority list for Christmas but also is not an enemy in my mind. Anyway, here are a few questions I asked Jonas just because I was curious to see what my little guy was thinking about Jolly Old St. Nick (responses interspersed between licks of the spatula, of course:)

Me: "Jonas, who brings you presents, Mommy and Daddy or Santa?"

Jonas
: "You and Daddy give the presents to Santa, and he brings them to me."

Me: "Hmmm....interesting thought. And how does Santa get in our house to give them to you?"

Jonas:
"He has a key."

Me: "Who gives him a key?"

Jonas:
"His mom does!!"
(spoken in that, "Gee, don't you know anything?" voice)

Me: "Makes sense. And how does Santa get here?"

Jonas: "On his sled that the reindeer pull."

Me: "And where does Santa live?"

Jonas:
After thinking for awhile, "In North Mounds View"

Me: "Well, North is certainly the right direction"
:)

Definitely an informative interview:) I love finding out what kids are thinking.

P.S. I wish the snow wasn't melting! Come on White Christmas! Come back snow, please! I have a little boy that is dying to build a snowman and a snow fort and snow balls and anything else you can make with snow:) And his little sister appears to be a fan too! And lastly, Santa, since you are a fan of Coke (like someone else I know and I love so dearly), you would be a welcome guest at this house as long as you bring some to share:)

Sweet boy. :) Totally like-minded. We just say that Santa is not real, but he is fun to pretend and imagine stories about... just like everything these 3-year olds do! We love imaginative play. :)

What a sweetheart! Santa's not a big deal for us either - Ryan knows what he looks like, but doesn't ask many questions so I kinda leave it at that for now. I imagine once Santa visits daycare next week, he'll want more background information on the big guy. :)

I love your attitude about Santa. At our house he fills the stockings and that's it. If we come across him somewhere, such as during our impromptu trip to the zoo, well then if the kiddos are brave enough they can sit on his lap, but truly FORGET about paying for an over-priced picture of the man. I've wondered about how to refrain from lying outright regarding Santa when asked point blank questions. I was particularly impressed with my answer to this question:
Ane: Is Rudolph real?
Me: He is as real as Santa is. :)

i like this. bryce was looking for santa in the sky today. its the first year where he is really believing in santa, reindeer, ect. I'm struggling a bit with how much to play along, but i agree-relax! we were all kids and its fun to pretend!

Hahaha this was wonderful! My favorite part was about Santa's mom obviously giving him the key to your house. So sweet :)
