Funny morning dialogue:
Background: A couple of weeks ago, the kids and I went to a pet store and purchased three goldfish. They are named Honey, Hank and Hubert. They are happy in their little bowl on our counter and seem to be thriving. The kids really like them...August is very intrigued and points often when they are darting and diving in their bowl. This morning, I was feeding them when Jonas asked,
"Why does their food stink so much, Mom?"
"I don't know, bud. It just does."
Jonas: "It is really smelly. What's in there?"
Me: (looking at the ingredient list) "Fish meal, ground brown rice, dried yeast, shrimp meal..."
A few minutes later, when August woke up, Jonas and I went in to get him. At first glance, I noticed that August had a pimple on his face and lovingly said,
"Oh buddy. You have a zit. Ouch!"
Jonas then said,
"Mom, what's a shrimp? How did it get there?"
I then switched my mind back to our conversation about the goldfish food, so I said,
"Someone caught them."
Jonas, with a puzzled look on his face, "No, Mom. How did it walk there?"
Assuming he was still referring to how the shrimp got into the goldfish food, I said,
"Shrimp are little sea creatures. They swim in the ocean."
Jonas: (with a little bit of frustration in his voice) "How did it get there then?" (pointing to August's face).
I was completely confused at this point.
(Pause in conversation while we both mull over how neither of us are understanding each other)...
I then looked at August and realized that Jonas was talking about the zit on August's face.
"Jonas, did you think I said a shrimp was on August's face?"
Jonas: "Yes, Mom. You did."
Me (now laughing): "No, I said zit. It is a pimple...just a little owie."
Jonas then laughed too. Good thing we cleared that up. I am so glad shrimp don't walk into our beds at night and burrow themselves under the skin on our cheeks. Yuck. So many things to be thankful for (including early-morning miscommunication). Kids are the best. Happy Wednesday, everyone!
