So Jason and I are filling out applications for SEND International-a missions organization that we have connections to (we went to their summer conference in 2007) and have developed relationships with several of their missionaries over these last two years in hopes of joining their ranks at some point in the future. Anyway, I came to question 13 which states:
How would you explain salvation to someone? Please support your answer with Scripture references.
My first thought was, How vague! But I suppose this is a skill that missionaries, and all Christians, for that matter, should have mastered, so here is my humble attempt. I implemented the Romans Road with various other texts. I wanted to keep it basic, to the point, and I wanted to make sure that every important part of the gospel message was covered. Let me know what you think...
I would begin by explaining that everyone has a big problem: we are all sinners and that sin separates us from life (Romans 3:23). We are in effect, dead, and we need someone to bring us back to life. The wages, or result of sin, is death…physically and spiritually, and we need help. (Romans 6:23) No person can help us, however, so we need someone outside of ourselves, and outside of our world to save us. This person is Jesus Christ. Without Jesus, we are all lost, and all the good things we do on earth do not matter (Ephesians 2:9)…we need His love and His perfection to stand before a Holy God (Revelation 15:4). We are so stained with sin that God cannot look upon us without His Son as a mediator and the Savior of our souls. This person, again, is Jesus Christ alone. Always and only Jesus. God loved us so much that He sent His son, Jesus Christ to be born as a man, while retaining his complete and perfect deity, to live and to die (Romans 5:8) He lived a perfect life here on earth and then died on the cross with the ultimate end being to give glory to His Father and one of the means was saving us from our sins (John 3:16). The story does not end there, thankfully, however, for three days later, after his body was wrapped and entombed, He rose again from the dead (Matthew 28:6). This is crucial. Christ did not stay dead, but it alive today and has the victory over sin and death (Romans 8:1) "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9). The result is peace with God and a relationship with Him through His Son (Romans 5:1) Once you have made this decision and opened your heart and mind to God's love and truth, this promise cannot be taken from you: Nothing can ever separate you from God's love. (Romans 8:38-39) You are secure in His hand, and His goodness and grace have begun a good work in you that He will carry on until you are called home (the day of Christ Jesus). (Philippians 1:5-7)
