I have a dear dear friend who lives and teaches in China....and she was back for a visit these past few months and we went out for a delicious lunch at The Holy Land....a cool restaurant in the Global Market in Minneapolis....we got caught up and enjoyed a new culture. We were Literature majors together at Northwestern...so it is good to chat and talk about books and poetry and teaching and all of the things that we both love. She's one of those friends that I can just pick up where we left off with. I love that kind of friendship...it seems to be the best type for this stage in life where everyone is on the move, doing new things and making different choices and living all over the world. For some reason we always end up eating somewhere new and exciting...not everyone likes new crazy foods, but I can always count on her to be up for the challenge! I love having friends that love to try new things. The Global Market is this amazing place with all sorts of restaurants and shops in one place (the old Sears building in Minneapolis)....there is Thai food, Chinese food, Swedish food, Palestinian food, Tibetan food, and pretty much anything else that you can image. It is fun to eat something exotic that you've never tried before (like cucumber sauce and yogurt on your meat and Khubz bread) and see Swedish painted horses and pepparkakor cookies right around the corner. I got Jonas this Nepalese hand-knit hat...for 7 $! Can't beat that...and its pretty cute too!
