When we were at Gooseberry Falls on Monday, Jason and Jonas were hiking around, and Jonas really really wanted to go "unnerneaf" translation "underneath" the waterfall with Daddy. And, on a normal day, I would not have cared if he simply wanted to get wet and go under the waterfall with Jason---as he is our child, and both Jason and I tend to just climb trees when we want, jump in lakes with our clothes on, etc., we expect that our children will be adventurous souls as well----However, on this particular day, after "swimming" (or just sitting down or tripping in Lake Superior twice and getting muddy), Jonas had already used up the clothes that I had brought him---3 outfits!, and he didn't have anything else to put on except for what he was wearing, (apparently for 2 day camping trips, I need to bring him 5 outfits!---:)) We told him that today he couldn't' go under the waterfall, but we promised him that next time we came, he could certainly try it:) He was sad, but reluctantly let us put him back in his stroller for the hike to the Upper Falls. On our way up, we were walking quietly together, and he pipes up saying, seemingly after some thought.... "Maybe someday after I get married." "What, Jonas?" I asked. He repeated himself, "Maybe someday after I get married I can go in the waterfall." Jason and I both looked at each other with huge smiles of disbelief....our toddler is already planning for his future where Mommy and Daddy can no longer tell him what to do! "Oh Jonas" Jason said, "Sweetie, you can go in the waterfall before you get married, Mommy and Daddy promise." And then I added, "But hopefully someday you will marry someone that would want to go in too." He seemed satisfied with those answers, and rode on completely contentedly in his stroller. I can't believe we even had this conversation with a person in a stroller! He's already talking about marriage, people!!! He must have heard this phrase somewhere....kids are certainly amazing, aren't they? And we just never know what those little minds are soaking up. It made me so thankful that we have (by God's grace) so many more years to visit so many more waterfalls before that big day! But time does fly, and with a 2-year old thinking about marriage, it certainly makes life seem shorter!
